Suffolk, VA blogger endorses Mayoral Candidate

Short answer:
I endorse Dr. Mike Debranksi for Mayor of Suffolk.

Long answer:
If I had a magic wand, I would create a secular Powell who used Debranski's model to implement Damiani's platform.

On Debranski:
Cons: He is not the best public speaker, often getting too caught up in analyzing the question to come up with a concise answer. He sits on the School Board and I am not sure if this creates some conflict of interest regarding City Council/School Board interactions.
Pros: He has a specific business plan model in mind for improving city operations, he is honest, straight-talking, very friendly, experienced, open minded, caring, family-centered, approachable, down to earth, and well educated. I think his run for Mayor is rooted in a desire to improve the city rather than with any personal ambition. In a word, he is a mensch.

Damiani crafted his platform to match our existent City Charter, and so it is the platform that makes the most technical sense. But Damiani is not in a position to successfully implement that platform due to his age.

The candidate with the best personality, hands down, is Powell. I think he would make an excellent "ambassador" for the City and his marketing background would be useful in upgrading the public perception of Suffolk. My issue with Powell is that I cannot separate his religious orientation from his leadership values, and neither can he. There are very few situations where this would come into play, but they are important situations for me. For example, Powell could be an obstacle to a Planned Parenthood in Suffolk. Also, he has very conservative affiliations, like Forbes, which I could not get over.

Leonard and Nixon wrote me off and I'm returning the favor. Leonard never responded to me at all, not even to politely decline. And Nixon agreed to an interview and then failed to actually schedule it.

Wahlstrom had the most articulate plans for the city, but she did not have the required number of signatures to be printed on the ballot. Yes, a write-in candidate is a legal and viable way to campaign. I cannot shake my discomfort that other candidates gathered the required number of signatures but she did not. Her write-in status excluded her from all public debates, making it hard to assess her comparatively with her peers. Here is a follow-up post that explains the write-in situation in more detail, and Deb Wahlstrom has been very kind about sharing information on ballot access with me.

Johnson had my attention for some time because: a) she is female, and b) she is very knowledgeable. But Johnson left out some really important information when we talked, such as the fact that her husband and Councilman Gardy operate a law firm together. I've been told that she and Councilman Parr have real estate holdings together, but have not yet been able to independently verify this. While there is nothing inherently wrong with these associations, I found it very troubling that she didn't mention them herself. Even when I specifically brought up transparency as it relates to "back room deals." I think being Mayor is a business association tactic for her, not a mission of service to the city.

I think Mike is a terrific person, but Melina - I am disappointed that you didn't present the signature issue more fairly. I sincerely believe that you are aware that this is NOT something that fell through the cracks - and it was not. This is a much bigger issue related to ballot access. As always, I'd be happy to talk to you further about this.

I'm certainly not looking for an endorsement from you - and never was. I didn't realize that you were interviewing us to endorse one of us over the other. As you presented to me, you were simply interviewing for your blog.

But, that is what politics is all about. We need more people looking at the candidates and the issues as you have done. I think it's great that you took the initiative to do this.

Deb,
My understanding of the signature issue is that if you had 500 registered voters sign, you would have been on the ballot. You had the required number of signatures, but not all of the folks were registered. So the final signature count was under 500.

My understanding of the ballot access issue part of this is that the City of Suffolk has unusually high signature requirements to be a ballot listed candidate (500 vs. 100 or 150 for other cities). But none of this changes the fact that you didn't get the minimum number of required signatures. And that is a red-flag for me.

It is important to me to fairly represent this issue, and don't want to leave you hanging. I would be happy to publish a more detailed explanation of this in a separate post if you would care to write it up and email it. I'll post on the blog and link to it here on my endorsement page.

I interviewed candidates to get a better understanding of everyone's orientation and platform so that I could make a decision about who the best candidate is. The sound bite opportunities you all have been given were just too limited for real decision making. Once I had the chance to speak with you all, I was in a position to make a choice about who I would vote for, and why, and I am sharing that choice with my readers in the form of an "endorsement." I could also have called it "my choice for Mayor" or "Who I will vote for," but endorsement seemed the most appropriate word in this context.

Would our interview have been any different if I had said "I'm interviewing candidates in order to form an opinion of whom I will endorse?" I hope not!

Thanks for all the info on the candidates! I refuse to vote for Johnson because I don't like the way the city handled the tornado aftermath. My house along with four other houses on my road were hit by the tornado on 4/28/08. The City of Suffolk didn't come to our house until 5/8/08, 10 days later. A church had to notify the city. Sleepy Hole Road was not important to the city because it wasn't in the media. I called many times and left messages and didn't get a response!

Jillacarter,
Did you write a post about that on your blog, when it happened? If so, please send the link to me. If not, maybe you could write one now. This is the time that people are searching for political posts. It sometimes depresses me how few people (especially in Suffolk) raise their voice re: local politics. Please, please, please... write up a full post on your tornado experience! Send it to your Council rep! Send it to Mayor Johnson! Send me the link! Hoooooo RAAAAAA!

I am somewhat humbled by the effort you have invested in researching and providing your findings. With the election coming up, I finally got around to investigating the mayoral campaign and was dismayed with the paucity of information. Frankly, your site provides the greatest amount of information - at least it gets past sound bites. Also, though you are clearly identified as a blogger, I perceive your standards to exceed those we find in some "mainstream" media as you clearly identify the subjective portions of your comments. My thanks for sharing your energy and opinions with the rest of us!

Van,
Thank you for your kind words. I'm glad my subjective/objective POV is clear- that was my goal!

So nice to hear from a reader- welcome and hope to see more of you.

Cheers,
Melina

Melina, thank you for all this information - I somehow stumbled upon it while looking at my twitter feed and got information from the Pilot website, I think. I have gotten no literature and heard very little about any Mayoral candidate, perhaps because I've only been here a year since moving away 18 ago; but still, it seems very odd to me. Thanks for your opinions and references to more information so that I can form some decent opinion of each candidate before casting my ballot.
